![]() I use a smaller spacer for the next one and do the same thing with the key. You can then pull it back to you if you feel the need, after you've seated the cutter on the spacers. The key will slide a bit sometimes while installing the cutter, just hold it in place behind the cutter till you get the cutter started over it and a ways down it. I figure the force of the cutter against the material is going to keep the key from moving very much if at all, no force in that direction - along the arbor. I've never noticed any migration, but there are lots of people out there with more experience than me. ![]() "a few inches off the end of the arbor" - OK, a few inches long plus your 1" cutter plus a few inches. How about just using a long enough piece so you don't worry about it? ![]() I use a pretty long chunk of key, it's easier to find than a short piece, and doesn't require cutting every time I change cutter widths, and therefore replenishing every little while. Maybe I should just go make some chips and see how it goes. ![]()
